  • listening with attention, hearing the words and the emotional impact
     behind the words;

  • speaking assertively, honestly, with clear focus;

  • arousing motivation within the client and other workers to make a difference
     and to take the steps needed to change;

  • nondefensive, dedicated focus to understanding the issues at hand.

c)  Authenticity --

  • listening with intuitive, "gut" skills, as well as with the head;

  • caring and warm, without a hidden agenda or attachment to outcome;

  • responsive to client concerns, reflecting back the sense of wht the client
     may be unclear about asking or afraid to ask;

d)  Cognitive Adaptability --

  • thinking analytically, with a systems perspective;

  • able to switch from abstract to concrete and back again; from past to present
     to future time, then back again;

  • recognizing patterns of behavior and responding to them in present time.
